hmmm i thought this was supposed to be getting easier…

14 Jul

maybe i was delusional. or had “easy” babies. but goodness gracious almost 19 month olds are well, little terrors. they run through the house at lightening speed. jumping over objects and laughing all the way. opposite directions 90% of the time. except when they are plotting. and i honestly believe they are plotting. over breakfast this morning they laughed and laughed as they ate strawberries and waffles and drank milk. and then i walked in the room and silence. i think magoo may have even winked at cindy lou. seriously. devious little creatures. of course i cannot imagine it any other way. they are active. and animated. and fun. but wow can they try your patience. we have two bookshelves in our living room. one is anchored to the wall. (as is the tv) because it is within their reach. but the other is between two couches. tucked away a bit. so we were a little less concerned. apparently the wigglers picked up on this. one of their new favorite tasks is to stand on the arm of the sofa and huck books from the highest shelves. i look up from doing some work to find magoo surrounded by foucault. sartre. thai cooking. harry potter. and an assortment of other titles. it takes mere seconds. i put the books back and once again they are at it. yesterday they learned that sliding across the small coffee table gave them immediate and close access. so they tried that. a dozen of so times. i pleaded. cajoled. begged. maybe even cried a little. to get them to stop. all to no avail. what are my options here? duct tape. straight jackets. locking them in their cribs. they are both headstrong. but magoo usually listens. unless he is under the influence of his sister. wow she moves with determination. i was explaining it to someone the other day that magoo seems to run through the house like phoebe on fr.iends. whereas cindy lou has a plan and a purpose. she eyes something up and makes it happen. there is never a doubt in her mind. perhaps i have had too much time to focus on this lately. m and hook are in nicaragua. with m’s youngest bro who is in the peace corps there. they are having an incredible time climbing volcanoes and going through cloud rainforests. and hot springs. i am chasing babies. and dogs. and chickens. (the cat does not require a lot of chasing).

this sounds horrible. like my babies are bad. they aren’t. at all. exhausting. yes. more so than i imagined. and reasoning with them is hilarious. though we have seemingly come to a bit of a breakthrough with eating. now instead of throwing their plates when they are done they hand them to me and sign all done. or more. it is very very much appreciated. by me. perhaps not the dogs. cindy lou will also adorable sit down anywhere if you ask her to go sit for something (like would you like a banana? go sit down. she just sits.) and magoo is quite the builder. he loves duplo blocks. meg.a blocks. any of them. cindy lou will grab book after book off the shelf or out of the bucket of their books and page through them. they laugh. cindy lou rubs magoos head all the time. they hug. they kiss. they trade toys. and for the most part get along. there is a little pushing. some minor hitting. and the occasional kick. but they are friends. brother and sister through and through. twins. and it is fun to watch. even when i worry what they are plotting for their next move…

we have been spending a decent amount of time with other kids. last week we spent some time with the adorable two year old twins from Lucky Little 13 and my godson (three weeks younger than the wigglers) visited last weekend. this week i took a walk with one of the amazing mamas from Defining Family and their twin girls. and tonight in the wee hours my dearest friend k and her little man arrive from LA for a few days. and we will be hanging with the whole Defining Family crew as well. it should be good. it’s nice to be around parents. friends. people who get it. at least some of it. i know the experience is different for everyone but parenting can be a team sport. we all have something to contribute.

and a few pics. just because…

This is exactly the scene at our house as well. It is So Effing Hard. It is just kicking my ass. I find it about 1000 times harder than last summer. I’m so glad to read your posts, because I thought it was supposed to get easier too, but it definitely did NOT.

Typical 19 month olds, and having lived with one who was on the “lower energy” side, I can only imagine the kind of workout you’re getting. Such a hard period, but hopefully they’ll grow out of it 😉
